Braised ox cheeks hiding in your eggs Benedict? It’s more “common” than you think

Common Man Coffee Roasters, exterior of the Martin Road cafe

Common Man Coffee Roasters (CMCR) at Robertson Quay doesn’t mess around. A Singapore-based specialty coffee roaster, wholesaler, and Academy that also manages several cafes in the region, CMCR is dedicated to the coffee craft. That doesn’t mean the food is secondary. The Martin Road cafe serves an extensive all-day brunch style menu with some great options.

Our immediate impression of the cafe

We liked the warmth and buzzing atmosphere that we experienced during our weekend visit, although it did get extremely crowded just before the peak lunch hour. While CMCR is spacious, tables aren’t placed very far apart, so it can feel a little bit impersonal when the cafe fills up. On the plus side, plenty of natural light filters in through the large glass windows, making the cafe feel more open. Service is efficient, and their baristas certainly do a great job. I can say with certainty that I enjoyed one of the best flat whites I’ve ever tasted here.

What to eat and drink at Common Man Coffee Roasters

Want a visual feast? The Organic Eggs Benedict is an explosion of rocket leaves with a sneaky bed of braised ox cheek hidden under two poached eggs, all sitting atop some lightly-toasted artisanal sourdough. Accompanying this is a slathering of scorched chive hollandaise. The braised ox cheek is decadent and tender, executed to perfection, and the presentation is Instagram-worthy. Don’t forget to hashtag #foodporn.

For something simpler, try the Croissant Croque Monsieur. Served with provolone cheese, ham, and a rather penny-pinching amount of béchamel sauce, it might not be the most filling item on the menu. While they are heavy-handed with the rocket leaves here, but you can always add a few sides to top up your tummy if you’re still hungry. An extra pork sausage will set you back something like seven bucks, and so will half an avocado, or some sautéed spinach.

This is clearly not the most wallet-friendly cafe around, but this is Robertson Quay after all, you learn to expect exorbitant prices. The coffee is worth every bit of moolah, though. Sustainably sourced and freshly roasted, the coffee here is prepared by properly trained baristas from the CMCR Academy.
