With six outlets in Singapore, Tiong Bahru Bakery has always pushed the envelope when it comes to expanding its influence. With a strong following of breakfast goers who laud their range of freshly baked French pastries and cakes, it’s hard for any Singaporean to be unfamiliar with the TBB brand and its cafes. That said, there is one particular branch that steps outside of the Tiong Bahru Bakery norm. Tiong Bahru Bakery Safari is a safari-themed cafe located in the heart of a tropical garden along Minden Road. The cafe sits next to farm-to-table restaurant Open Farm Community, a long-standing Dempsey favourite.
Embracing the outdoors and taking on a more rustic African Safari-like concept, the cafe is set in a hardy tent-like structure with wood being the primary element in its furnishings. Warm colours and earthy tones are present in the form of canvases, rope-lined pillars, polychromatic Kilim carpets, and neatly-framed insect taxidermies on the walls.
Sitting close to the picturesque Singapore Botanic Gardens on the way to the hidden enclave of restaurants at Dempsey Hill, Tiong Bahru Bakery Safari is far enough away from the bustle of the city to provide visitors with a sense of peace. Bring along a book or a friend, order a good coffee, and sit amongst nature to enjoy the quiet.
We recommend a large flat white to go with a crisp and buttery kouign amann (“queen a-mahn”), which TBB does beautifully. Outside of their sweet pastries and signature croissants (freshly baked every couple of hours), the cafe also offers some savoury options. On weekdays, you might want to indulge in a plate of 100% sourdough Liége-style waffles.
That said, if you are looking for heartier brunch-style options like sausages and eggs, you might be better off visiting the Tiong Bahru Bakery outlets at Funan and Raffles City Shopping Centre.
